It’s good practise to do a couple of trial sails before launching into the season. And boy were we glad we did so this year too.
Our first trial went quite smoothly. But then, we were playing safe and did not unfurl the Genoa. For our next sail , we called a family of friends to join us. As luck would have it, we had to turn around even before we had reached the mouth of the Mandovi.
As Dilip steered the boat off the Captain of Ports jetty, he felt a sudden jerk, which we attributed to an UFO (Unidentified Floating Object). As there was no impediment to the steering and nothing trailing behind the boat (so nothing snagged on the propeller); we motored on. As we progressed down river, the engine began vibrating so hard the steering was rocking too. The bush around the propellor shaft had heated up and the engine vibrations were just not normal!
Our gracious friends, though disappointed, took the edge off our concern over a delicious lunch and this lovely Instagram post.
It being the week after Diwali, we had to wait a couple of days for the engineer to schedule a visit. Our support team from Hodi had already been briefed and they turned up at the same time.
While the engineer serviced the engine, the Hodi team checked the propeller shaft and the engine placement. We wanted to rule out the possibility that the shaft had shifted or that the engine had.
A detailed investigation of the engine followed by a working lunch and then a trial trip around the river. All seemed well.
So we took another trial sail this morning. The engine is A-ok!
That’s the story so far. We’re itching to go sailing, but until then stay in touch and follow us via Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, our Blog or our website
