Last weekend started well enough with a downwind sail in 8 to 10 knots of wind. We couldn’t have asked for better sailing weather on our way to Netrani. Our 70 year old guest, sailing for the first time in his life (come on you young people out there, what are you waiting for!?) was just a bit queasy. But you would never guess, just looking at him!
Having left Dona Paula at 0930, we made good time, arriving at Netrani at 0800 the next morning. A good breakfast later, we did a bit of snorkelling and diving, admiring the schools of trigger fish, butterfly fish and parrot fish; even a moray eel lurking amongst the coral.
We started on our return trip and made lunch en route - a scrumptious spread of chicken stew and rice. Just the ticket for a post-dive hungry crew. Having found his sea legs, our guest then tried his hand at helming too.
Crossing Cabo de Rama early the next morning we were in sight of Majorda beach by about 1430. The winds had just picked up. After motoring through the morning, we were glad to put up the sails. Seeing the beaches of Majorda, Utorda in their sandy glory, we couldn’t have been happier.
Then the winds rose and continued to rise! The huge waves they stoked and the upwind direction, had us slamming our way through. The winds were gusting 25 knots, dashing our hopes of an early homecoming. 5 hours and 4 tacks later we finally reached our moorings at 2100 hours.
Completely exhausted, the crew called it a day, trooping home for a hot shower, a hot meal and a long sleep.
