Recently, on May 19th, Dilip completed a decade since his circumnavigation or Sagar Parikrama. The first Indian to have completed a solo circumnavigation. The decade since has been just as eventful. We’ll let the pictures do the talking.
He mentored the first solo, non stop circumnavigation with Abhilash Tomy; earning both of them the right to put up their feet!
He published his account of his voyage with ‘The First Indian', which is available in print in English and Marathi, as well as on Kindle.
Just before the ‘Serendipitous Six’ started on their circumnavigation, he finally swallowed the anchor (took premature retirement) in December 2016.
But you can’t keep an old salt away for the water too long, and he took off on long sails with his mentor and father figure, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.
Once across the Atlantic on Sir Robin’s Greypower…
Then on a trip to Greenland and Iceland, on Sir Robin’s Sanjula, where a dive under an iceberg made for a lifetime of memories.
And filling in the gaps with frequent sails on the Suhaili, the boat Sir Robin built in India and sailed around the world solo.
Bringing us to his current passion, Antara, built by Ratnakar Dandekar, in Goa, India
It took some effort though to get this project going. Look out for our next newsletter where we’ll tell you all about the registration of a personal boat in India.
